(I) GEOS7012 (36 hours) (1) Site Investigation (SI) for Civil Engineering Projects(2) Formulating SI Questions, SI Stages, Desk Study (3) Walkover Survey, Field Mapping, Planning the GI, Ground Models (4) field class on engineering geological plans (5) Aerial Photo Interpretation (6) Ground Investigation: Drilling, Probing, Pitting, Sampling (7) Ground Investigation: Field Testing, Supervision, Reporting (8) Laboratory Testing (9) field class at GI works site or contractor’s Depot (10) laboratory practical (11) Description and Classification of Soil and Rock for Engineering Purposes (12) Case Studies and Other Topics: Geotechnical Uncertainty, SI Ethics and Quality issues, Work of the Engineering Geologist(II) GEOS8101 (36 hours) (1) Earth Pressures and Design of Retaining Walls (2) Bearing Capacity and Design of Shallow Foundations (3) Design of Piled Foundations (4) Practice in design of retaining walls (5) Practice in calculating stresses in the ground (6) Limit Equilibrium Methods and introduction to stability of geotechnical structures (7) Stability of Slopes and design of soil nailed slopes (8) Burland’s Triangle; mechanics, observed behavior geological models & empiricism in geotechnical design(III) GEOS8102 (36 hours) (1) Stereographic projection methods & rock slope stability (2) Rock mass and discontinuity surveys (3) Discontinuity shear strength criteria (4) Intact rock/rock mass failure criteria (5) Rock mass classifications (6) Underground excavation in hard rock - failure mechanism (7) Underground excavation in hard rock – design of rock support (8) Foundations and piling on/in rock (9) Underground excavation in hard rock - control of groundwater inflow (10) Underground excavation in hard rock - drill-and-blast construction (11) Planning and management of rock cavern projects (12) Reliability and back analysis in rock engineering

Instructors' Qualifications / 導師資歷:
At least a Bachelor Degree in related discipline, or Corporate Membership of HKIE or equivalent; in general with at least three years of teaching experience at post-secondary level or ten years of professional practice in related discipline.
