Mr CHENG Pak-hei

Technician Assistant
Sir Edward Youde Memorial Outstanding Apprentice Awards 2014/15

Mr CHENG Pak-hei The result of my Hong Kong Certificate of Education Examination was only average and therefore I did not continue my study at Secondary 6.  Always interested in assembling, dismantling and maintenance works, I enrolled on a one-year Diploma of Vocational Education (Building Services Engineering) programme offered by the Youth College to learn the necessary knowledge and skills of the engineering industry.  Upon completing the programme, I took the Higher Diploma in Building Services Engineering programme to further equip myself.

The Higher Diploma programme featured a student placement programme which I attended school one day a week and was on placement for the remaining four days, repairing air-conditioning systems at construction sites and shops.  Apart from learning the professional knowledge and skills, I also had to learn how to balance work and study, which was a big challenge to me.  I am grateful to my parents for their support and encouragement.  I am also thankful for the patience and guidance of my colleagues.  Without them, I would not have been able to complete my Higher Diploma programme and apprenticeship.  I also have much to be proud of to have gained the recognition of my employer, institution and the Sir Edward Youde Memorial Fund.

Compared with my school mates who progress seamlessly from secondary school to university, I perhaps have taken a winding path with twists and turns.  Nevertheless, the work experience, training and friendship gained along the way are unique.  As the saying goes, “All Roads Lead to Rome.”  There are multiple pathways to success.  I believe that each pathway is unique and fascinating in its own way.  Looking ahead, I am going to pursue a degree programme and hope to become an outstanding engineer some day.
